How To Unclog A Kitchen Sink

how-to-unclog-a-kitchen-sinkThe sink is among the most used plumbing fixtures you have at home. It is where a lot of our daily activities take place: washing the dishes; preparing the food for preparation; cleaning dirty pots and pans; washing your face and brushing your teeth among many others. Because of the sink drain pipe’s exposure to different substances, it gets clogged. Fortunately, it is not that difficult to remove a clog inside the sink drain pipe. Here are four methods that you can try!

Baking Soda and Vinegar

For minor clogs, you can always use the baking soda and vinegar method! Scoop out the standing water in the kitchen sink. Pour a cup of baking soda into the drain pipe. Make sure that it touches the walls of the pipes to give it more power. Afterward, get white vinegar from your cupboard and pour a cup of it into the drain, too. Plug the hole with an old cloth or a rag to prevent the solution from escaping out of the pipe. Let the two ingredients combine chemically. The reaction they’ll form will fizz out the sticky substances that are stuck to the walls of the pipe. When there’s no more fizzing sound coming from the sink drain, remove the plug and pour hot water to wash away the remnants of the baking soda and vinegar.

Wire Coat Hanger

There are times when the clog has already formed into a ball inside the pipe. You can use an improvised hook made from a wire coat hanger to hook out the obstruction. Insert the wire inside the drain pipe and try to catch the clog. Carefully pull the wire coat hanger out and dispose the waste materials properly. Repeat the process as necessary.

Another way to remove the clog is through the use of a plunger. Fill the kitchen sink with water so that the rubber part of the plunger is soaked. Position the plunger over the drain hole and plunge up and down. Maintain a consistent pace. After about 15 repetitions, turn the faucet on and check if the water will flow efficiently through the drain pipe.

Plumbing Snake

If the clog is too stubborn to be removed, use the ever reliable plumbing snake. Insert the end of the snake into the drain pipe. Make sure that the screen trap is removed to get better access. Turn the crank clockwise and keep on pushing on the snake when it touches the clog. Pull it out of the pipe and dispose the waste properly. If you no longer feel resistance, you may have already removed everything. Flush the remaining substances with hot water as usual.
