Camera Sewer Inspection | South Florida Plumbing ServiceBuying a home is a major investment. For most people, it represents most of their wealth. As a result, careful home buyers make sure that the building is inspected thoroughly by a trained professional.

Everything gets checked: the roof, the appliances, and the foundation. However, one part of a home often gets overlooked. Many home buyers neglect to inspect their sewer systems with a mainline video system.

Of all the tools that plumbers have, the sewer inspection video systems are some of the coolest. Every type of system has one thing in common: a small camera connected to a display. The most common models are guided through the sewer system with a push wire, but the most advanced models are actually attached to small remote-controlled wheeled robots. But regardless of the delivery system, the main idea is the same. The inspector places the camera into the sewer line and guides it through the system, looking for problems as the camera records its journey.

Signs That Your Sewer Might Need a Mainline Video Inspection

There are a number of signs that can indicate that you have possible trouble with your sewer system:
Physical Damage – If the flooring is warped or buckling, it could be a sign that the foundation has shifted. If that’s the case, there’s a possibility that the sewer line may have been damaged in the process. Basement Drain Stains – Water stains around the basement drains could also indicate damage that caused the drains to back up in the past. Trees – We all love trees, right? They give shade, look nice, and generate oxygen for us to breathe. However, they also have a tendency to rip up pipes with their roots. Older clay pipes are especially vulnerable, so an older house with large trees around the sewer line could be at risk. Sewer Clean Outs – These are a normal part of most sewer systems, but they could indicate previous problems. First, if the clean out cap has been replaced, or there are grooves caused by augurs in the PVC material, it could indicate some previous work in the sewer line. If the clean out is made of a newer material than the rest of the system, it probably indicates that some serious work had been needed in the past. Here are a few things that the inspector looks for:
  • Damaged Pipes: Cracked, collapsed, or broken pipes can be caused by inferior pipe materials or shifting soil conditions.
  • Misaligned Joints: Years of alternating dry and wet weather can cause the soil to expand and contract, shifting the pipes out of alignment. When that happens, waste water and sewage can leak into the surrounding soil.
  • Tree Roots: Tree roots are surprisingly powerful. Given time, they can even break through solid stone. Compared to that, the unsealed joints of old clay pipes are a piece of cake.
  • Blockages and Clogs: Years of continual use will inevitably leave their mark on a sewer line. Eventually, areas of congested pipe will build up. Without periodic maintenance, those areas will get to the point where they begin to restrict the flow of waste within the pipe.

Commercial Plumbing: It may seem kind of obvious, but homes are not the only buildings with sewer systems. All of the above factors that can affect a sewer line also fully apply to commercial buildings. Every hour that a company has to close its doors or shut down production due to a failure in its sewer system means lost profits. Don’t let that happen to your business.
