DIY Natural Drain Unblockers For Homeowners

drain unblockersOnce in a while, you’ll find a drain or two in your home clogged with scum, dirt, food particles or waste that get into your drainpipes. Fortunately, it is not that difficult to get rid of blockages. However, we have always recommended the use of natural home remedies instead of harsh chemical cleaners. Well, actually most plumbers do and that’s because toxic ingredients in chemical cleaners may eventually damage your pipes in the long run. So if you are looking for natural solutions to get rid of blockages in your pipes, here’s a list of the best and easiest remedies you can make on your own.

1. Boiling Water

And you don’t have to make this one! You simply have to boil a kettle of water, pour it down the drain and let it wash away the sticky particles that have clung onto your drainpipes. This is also very effective for grease and oily substances that go down your drains. If you want to sterilize your sink, you can also use boiling water, too!

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar

Okay. You may have heard about good old baking soda and vinegar from your grandparents! True enough, these two cooking ingredients have long been used to clear clogs in plumbing systems. Simply pour a cup of your preferred baking soda brand into the drain. Follow up with a cup of vinegar. Remember, the ratio is 1 is to 1. Let the two ingredients create a chemical reaction. The bubbling effect will remove the substances that are stuck on the walls of your drainpipes. Once the fizzing in the pipe is over, pour boiling water to wash the ingredients off.

3. Alka Seltzer Tablets & Water

So you don’t have baking soda in your cupboard. Don’t worry. We’re pretty sure that you have Alka Seltzer tablets in your medicine cabinet! Drop three pieces into the drain and follow up with a cup of vinegar. You should expect a fizzing reaction like what happens when you use baking soda and vinegar. Let the reaction last and once the bubbling effect has settled, pour boiling water to clean the pipes.

4. Baking Soda & Lemon Juice

Lemon juice in this case is only a substitute in case you don’t have vinegar in stock. Note that lemon juice is more expensive and yet it smells a lot better when used on your drain. After all, we use lemon as a natural drain freshener! As usual, pour a cup of baking soda and follow it up with a cup of lemon juice.

5. Salt, Borax & Vinegar

People have been experimenting on other home remedies and we found this mixture also effective. Just combine a quarter cup of salt, a quarter cup of borax and also a quarter cup of vinegar. Pour the mixture into the drain and follow it up with plenty of boiling water. That should clear your drain effectively although it might take a while longer than the other remedies provided above.
