Plumbers 911 Experts Will Keep Your Facility’s Water Heater in Good Shape

commercial water heater | Boston MA PlumbersMost people are familiar with the water heater in their homes. They hear the phrase “hot water heater” and think of a big 20 to 50 gallon tank sitting under their staircase or in their basement. However, as large as a residential water heater’s capacity can seem, that’s nothing compared to the volume of hot water needed by some businesses.

Let’s take restaurants for example. According to a 2008 study by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, full-service restaurants can average about 2,200 gallons of hot water per day. Fast food restaurants use less hot water, mostly because they serve food in disposable containers, but it’s still a considerable amount.

Just being able to produce that much hot water is difficult enough, but that’s only half of the story. The total daily use of hot water doesn’t take into account the fact that a restaurant doesn’t use hot water at a constant rate. There are times when hot water is used at a much faster rate during lunch and dinner rushes, for instance. Due to the needs of sanitation, hot water always has to be available.

Then there are industrial processes that require much higher temperatures than required for household use, sometimes above boiling temperature. Due to the heat lost when hot water travels through even well-insulated pipes, there are times when a centralized hot water heater won’t do the job and several water heaters need to be installed. Some buildings, particularly hi-rise office buildings can be particularly challenging to keep supplied with hot water.

Types of Commercial Water Heaters

Fortunately, there are a number of options for providing enough hot water for a business. Considering the sheer volume of water produced, all of which requires energy, choosing the right, energy-efficient system can even save a company thousands of dollars per year. Here are some of the more common options:

Conventional Storage Water Heaters: These are similar to the familiar home water heaters that most of us are used to, just on a much larger scale. Some have a capacity of around 200 gallons. They can also be installed with additional insulated water tanks, vastly increasing their storage capacity.

Demand-Type Water Heaters: These units dispose of the water tank and are installed directly onto the water supply pipes near the appliance or fixture that they serve. Because the units only engages when the water is needed, they’re a great energy saver. However, because there is no reserve supply of hot water, they sometimes experience difficulty providing the volume of hot water that might be required at one time.

Solar Water Heaters: These are some of the most energy-efficient water heaters available. Most models consist of a collector and an insulated storage tank. A heat-conducting fluid flows through the collector, where it is heated by the sun’s energy, and transfers the heat to the water in the storage tank. The primary advantage to this method is the fact that aside from regular maintenance costs, the energy is basically free, which means big savings for your company.

Tankless Coil Water Heaters: This is another way to drastically reduce energy costs. A tankless coil water heater runs the water directly through a furnace or boiler, or through a heat exchange device in the furnace. Basically it’s a way of killing two birds with one stone. You end up heating your building and your water for the same energy cost. Extremely energy efficient.

Indirect Water Heaters: This design uses the same principles as the tankless coil water heater, but instead of directly flowing through the furnace, the water is held in a storage tank nearby. A heat-conducting fluid flows through the furnace’s heat exchanger, then flows through a coiled tube in the storage tank, heating the water. Again, it severely reduces energy costs.

Heat Pump Water Heaters: This is another clever way of using the same energy for two different purposes. It basically functions as a cooling system, electrically transferring heat from one area of a building and moving it to the water in a storage tank. You can think of it as a refrigerator that works in reverse. However, it is best used in areas where the cooling system is used frequently.
